Rock & Rule Movie PosterFirst a little history of this movie… This animated movie was made in 1983 from the animations studio Nelvana (Eek! The Cat, Care Bears, Magic School Bus), but don’t let the cartoonization (ya, I made that word up myself) fool you, this movie is more like Heavy Metal than Care Bears. This rock n’ roll movie has songs from the big names of the time: Blondie, Cheap Trick and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The movie takes place sometime in the future where mutated animals rule, and apparently they like to rock n’ roll as well. The ‘bad guy’ is a rocker named Mok, who I think took way to many drugs and destroy his brain. He is a famous rock star and everyone loves his shows, but yet he wants to destroy the world? It never explains why he is so bent on destruction, but does it really matter. He looks a lot like a creepy Mick Jagger, but sings like David Bowie.

I watched this movie for the first time when I was about 12 or 13 years old and I don’t remember all the drug references in it, which should say something for my innocence at the time. There is quite a bit of drug use throughout the movie and does have some satanic references as Mok is obsessed with raising a demon (of course during one if his fabulous shows).

This movie actually did so badly at the box office and cost so much to make ($8 million), for that time, that it it almost bankrupted Nelvana. The animation was cutting edge and the special effects were huge as well. Most of the film was drawn as computer animation was just beginning.

Poor plot and the frequent cheesy lines aside, the music was what made the movie. Songs like the head-banging ‘Born to Raise Hell’, by Cheap Trick and hypnotic ‘Invocation Song’, sung by Deborah Harry. All in all, I still love this movie, a fond memory from the past to rock out to again. 4 out of 5 stars from me.
