Brenda's Movie Reviews

I love movies! Sci-Fi, Horror, B-flicks, Chick-flicks, Action, Adventure, and just plain weird. Here I will be reviewing movies I watch (I watch a lot of movies!). I'll give my honest opinion and you can take what you will. Warning: I'm no Siskel or Ebert. If there is a movie you want me to review, and if it's on Netflix, I will review it. I may also do TV shows and made for TV movies, but the stipulation is that they have to be on Netflix.

Tai Chi Master Movie Review PDF Print E-mail

Tai Chi Master released in 1993 is a classic Jet Li Kung Fu movie. It's in Cantonese with English subtitles. It's about two boys who learn kung fu. When they grow up, one joins the government and the other has anti-government philosophies. Betrayed by his friend, Jet Li's character, Junbao, goes crazy until he discovers the meaning to Tai Chi. Finally, Junbao and Siu Lin, played by Michele Yeoh, confront the cruel government officials. Junbao then confronts his brother/monk trying to show him the evil path he has taken and get him to become good once more.

It has some great fighting special effects, typical of kung fu movies. Michelle Yeoh and Jet Li are fantastic, two of my favorites in martial arts films. Tai Chi Master also has the great mix of fighting and comedy that make these movies so great. I loved it when they surfed on a couple other guys while fighting with bamboo staves. The sound effects are cheesy, but the music really transports you into the movie. I

f you love martial arts films, this is a must watch. I'm giving it 5 out of 5 for the excellent fights and the meaningful story typical of Jet Li's true Kung Fu films.

Agree with me? Don't Agree? Leave me a comment and tell me why. If there is a movie you want me to review, and if it's on Netflix, let me know and I will review it. I may also do TV shows and made for TV movies, but the stipulation is that they have to be on Netflix.

Halo Legends Movie Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brenda

Created just this year, this series of short stories are based in the universe of a game called Halo. Japanese anime has always been a favorite for me. This one reminds me a bit of Heavy Metal, without all the sex. Each of the seven stories is done by a different studio and they each had their own artistic interpretation, which was pretty cool.

The story lines have a war theme to them. Humans are a warring species, but we will unite when we have a common enemy called the Covenant. The first two stories are all narration, similar to the Loc-Nar in Heavy Metal telling the little girl the story of her past, only this is a hologram talking to some frozen guy she calls chief.

Now I've never played any of the Halo games, but you don't need to have played or read any of the books to follow along with the story line. My husband, who has played the games and my son, who has read some of the novels geeked out about some things and from what I understand this movie is a prequel to the games.

My least favorite story was the Duel, the animation and the story was a bit hard to follow. My favorite story was the Odd One Out. It was funny although a mostly superficial story. All in all, I don't think I would buy this, but I did enjoy it. I'm going to give it 4 out of 5 on Netflix.com.

Gamer Movie review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brenda

OK here is one I thought I would like. A movie about games, I like games. Unfortunately, this was not the case. It is about SIMs on steroids. In the future, you can choose to be a real live person controlled by someone else. I really don't get that at all, why would anyone choose to be controlled by another person of their own free will? Now we throw a new piece on the board, Convicts (why is it always the convicts) can battle to the death to earn their freedom in a war game based of the same brain controlling nano-virus.

So here we go with the stereo-typical bad-ass, Cable in the game, who of course was wrongfully accused and sent to prison to keep the real reason for the brain controlling nano-things under-wraps. He has a wife, who because she couldn't get a real job is now working in the SIMS world as a sleazy guy's slut and their child has been taken away from her. Hum, I wonder why. Of course, he will need to escape the game, find and save his wife and child and kill the maker of the games, Castle.

Don't forget the underground movement that is trying to uncover the plot and make Castle, pay for his horrible crimes of trying to make everyone buy his games by becoming a player or a person in one of the games. They will of course help Cable because how else will he survive.

There is lots of blood/guts and sex fetish in this movie, so if that is your thing, I'm sure you can ignore the crappy and over done plot. Gamer... good concept, failed at the delivery. End was very anti-climactic and a bit dumb. Action was so-so. I'm giving 3 of 5 stars on Netflix.

Rock & Rule Movie Review PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brenda

Rock & Rule Movie PosterFirst a little history of this movie… This animated movie was made in 1983 from the animations studio Nelvana (Eek! The Cat, Care Bears, Magic School Bus), but don’t let the cartoonization (ya, I made that word up myself) fool you, this movie is more like Heavy Metal than Care Bears. This rock n’ roll movie has songs from the big names of the time: Blondie, Cheap Trick and Earth, Wind & Fire.

The movie takes place sometime in the future where mutated animals rule, and apparently they like to rock n’ roll as well. The ‘bad guy’ is a rocker named Mok, who I think took way to many drugs and destroy his brain. He is a famous rock star and everyone loves his shows, but yet he wants to destroy the world? It never explains why he is so bent on destruction, but does it really matter. He looks a lot like a creepy Mick Jagger, but sings like David Bowie.

I watched this movie for the first time when I was about 12 or 13 years old and I don’t remember all the drug references in it, which should say something for my innocence at the time. There is quite a bit of drug use throughout the movie and does have some satanic references as Mok is obsessed with raising a demon (of course during one if his fabulous shows).

This movie actually did so badly at the box office and cost so much to make ($8 million), for that time, that it it almost bankrupted Nelvana. The animation was cutting edge and the special effects were huge as well. Most of the film was drawn as computer animation was just beginning.

Poor plot and the frequent cheesy lines aside, the music was what made the movie. Songs like the head-banging ‘Born to Raise Hell’, by Cheap Trick and hypnotic ‘Invocation Song’, sung by Deborah Harry. All in all, I still love this movie, a fond memory from the past to rock out to again. 4 out of 5 stars from me.
